Hate measuring out honey, corn syrup, and other sticky substances? Here’s a hint: spray your measuring device with a coat of non-stick spray before you measure whatever you need and it will slide right out, mostly mess-free. And now you know.

I guess I just never thought of it because it’s soooooo simple!!!
I also really like my plunger style measuring cup. Not sure what it’s actually called, but Alton Brown uses them all the time…. it’s got a sleeve with emasurements and a tube part that goes inside. It’s great for peanut butter, brown sugar, shortening, etc.
The plunger type cup is called a "Measure-All Cup" and it's sold my The Pampered Chef! I use it for all my goey measurements. I'm not allowed to link my webpage, but you can check it out at www(dot)pamperedchef(dot)biz/emili. Go to "order products" select option 2 and the kitchenware. It comes in 2 different sizes.
You guys have the best tips on here! And all this time I've been grumbling about washing out corn syrup, honey and the likes and it was this easy! UGH! :)
For shortening my mom showed me to use plastic wrap. It works wonders and you just throw it away and don't even have to clean the thing. A friend also pointed out that you can use another piece of plastic wrap and scrape it out with your hand. No mess!
I’ve been browsing this site and am in L-O-V-E. Making “Tortellini Sausage Soup” again tonight (http://www.ourbestbites.com/2009/10/tortellini-sausage-soup/). I’m just counting down the minutes!
Anyway, saw this helpful post and wanted to add that the easiest thing for me to do when measuring shortening is the “water displacement method.” Fill a liquid measuring cup with water and then add shortening to raise the water level to the amount of shortening you need. So if you fill the measuring cup to 1 cup and you need 1/4 cup of shortening, add it to the water until the water line reaches 1 & 1/4 cup. Pour the water off and use the shortening!
I will be using this method when I attempt the homemade tortillas (http://www.ourbestbites.com/2008/07/cooking-class-flour-tortillas/). Thanks ladies!
Brilliant!
If there is also oil in the recipe, then I just do the oil first so the cup is pre-greased for me :)
