Easy Pretzel Turtles

Tis the season for goodies and it seems like people are always looking for quick and easy ones. It recently came to my attention that not everyone in the world has been introduced to the pretzel turtle and that's just a cryin' shame! This is possibly the easiest little goodie you'll come across. They can be made in about 10 minutes and with only 3 ingredients. However here I'll show you my little twists to take them a notch up and make them cooler than everyone else's pretzel turtles. Because at Christmas time it's all about one-upping everyone else, right?? Kidding people, kidding. Really though, these are great for satisfying your own sweet tooth or for making to give away. Either way they'll be gone in a flash!

Easy Pretzel Turtles

small pretzels
Rolo candies - one bag has about 55 candies
Pecan halves - or optionally peanuts, cashews, and m&m's
Optional: almond bark or white chocolate for drizzling

This is easy as can be! Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Place pretzels on a parchment lined baking sheet. I like to use parchment paper for easy handling, but you can also put them on foil, a silpat, or directly onto the cookie sheet.

Unwrap your Rolo candies and place one on top of each pretzel like a cute little hat.

Don't they look like they're just standing there waiting for an order? At least someone in my house stands at attention because heaven knows my children don't!

Place pan in the oven for 3-4 minutes. Any longer is probably too long. You just want the chocolate on the outside to look glossy and melty, but they should still hold their shape.

Remove pan from oven and take a pecan and gently press it right into the center of the chocolate candy.

Keep going and be filled with joy each time you feel that gooey caramel squish out underneath your fingers. It's one of life's little pleasures.

Here's where you can be creative. You don't need to stick to pecan halves. I also love cashews and peanuts (I used honey roasted peanuts here). And for kiddos and those who can't eat nuts or don't like them, M&M's make a great little topper, or those mini Hershey's kissables are cute too. I always throw a few of those in for color and because the kids like them. And if it's not Christmas time, use the colorful ones- they're adorable!

If you want to get fancy you can give them a little drizzle of almond bark or white chocolate. Just melt some in a plastic baggie and nip the corner off to drizzle. A little goes a long way; I used a half a square of almond bark for half a batch and had plenty left over.

Now definitely do yourself a favor and eat a few of these babies warm off the pan. Mmmm... Wait for the rest to cool and harden before you pack or plate them up. I pop them in the fridge because I stink at the whole patience thing.

These are so cute that I love to package them in little peep-window boxes. You can find boxes like this at craft stores like Michaels.

Or just pop them in a bowl or on a plate for a party. Either way they'll be gone fast! And just look how fancy-schmancy they look. No one has to know you whipped them up so fast :)

I used your printer friendly button for the first time today. WOW, am I impressed. It formats the recipe perfectly, allows me to modify and remove if I desire, and even offers PDF format so that I can save it to my hard drive. AWESOME! Thanks SO much.

Wow... another great recipe! Did you see you made the Pioneer Woman's top 20 referenced websites for favorite recipes?

Pretty amazing since she received over 19K comments asking for favorite online recipes.

Congratulations! One of your recipes was one of my favorites.

Made these a couple weeks ago, with every intention of sharing with friends and neighbors. Yeah, that didn't happen! Made a second batch and delivered them as soon as they were cool, because my hips can't afford to eat even one more!

I've made these for two years now using the waffle pretzels and the microwave rather than the oven. I'm so happy to know how to one up everyone else with these these Christmas!!! THanks! (good chuckle). Boring me would not have thought to try to change up the recipe any...dah!

I'm going to make these this weekend. Thanks!

I've got a gazillion of your ideas and recipes I want to try. But these will probably be the grand prize winner since I can make them [hopefully] with the kiddos for their teachers. I love the m&m's idea, since half my family is allergic to nuts! Thanks for sharing, and making everything look delicious in the process.

oooo, dangerously easy! And definitely yummy! Will give this one a shot! Thanks ever so much!!

Stephanie said...

Wow! These look delicious and I love how easy they are to make.

you guys have the best ideas. I made the pizza bites last week and I have been trying to figure out what to make for teachers/ neighbors this year. I always make linzer cookies (which I still will) but I like to try easy new ideas too that I have not seen before to add to the linzers. This sound great-yet addictive!

I would just tweek the recipe just a tad and DOUBLE THE RECIPE!!!

I practically ran to the kitchen to make these with my daughter after seeing the recipe this morning. Why have I never heard of these before?! Could there be a better use for Rolos? I doubt it!

Kara said...

I LOVE these! So simple, and so brilliant, like most things you girls do. I totally want to do these for neighbor gifts. THANK YOU! :)

Oooh, I love making these! I never get to use nuts because my hubbie is allergic, but maybe I'll just make a batch for myself! By the way, did you gals notice you were one of the top 20 most referenced recipe sites on one of Pioneer Woman's giveaway the other day? I'm not surprised. I'm glad so many people are finding your site because it's fantastic!

Laura and Stephanie- We found out about making PW's list when everyone else did, and we were totally surprised! Thanks to everyone who mentioned us!

I made these a few weeks ago, and yours are so much lovelier than mine. I am going to pout now. You always make such beautiful things!

Kathy said...

Thanks for the reminder about these! I've only ever made them with pecans on top, so now I have a few more ideas to try!

Sarah Rachelle said...

I love making these! If Rolos are a bit hard to find you can also use Caramel Hershey kisses, though you don't leave them in the oven as long because they melt faster than Rolos.

betchacanteatjustone said...

What a fantastic idea! I'm going to give these a try for sure!

Jenn said...

I have been lamenting the fact that I don't have the time this year to bake like i usually do. These will be PERFECT treats for friends & neighbors!!

I just have to tell you how incredily excitd I was to see this recipe posted. I had these one time & couldn't get enough of them. I have been wondering ever since what they made them with. How simple is that??? THANKS!

Erin said...

Wow, I just did this with my 4 and 5 year old and we had so much fun. They literally took under 10 minutes from start to finish...just my kind of project and no messy clean-up. This is a new favorite! Thanks!

Amy said...

What an easy way to make these. This will be a recipe I will make every year. Thanks.

Jenn said...

I made 2 batches today. My "mini" pretzels look bigger than yours, so the chocolate & caramel don't cover the whole pretzel. My kids taste-tested them & ate 2 apiece, so they must be good!

Do you store these in the fridge or at room temp?

Sara @ Our Best Bites said...

Jenn, just store at room temp. Glad you liked them!

Wow! I'm going to make these this week! They are so my style...easy and yummy! :)

Thanks and Merry Christmas!

I was looking for something quick and easy to accompany the gift cards I bought for the kids teachers. Found it! Thanks so much!

I have made these once. My 17 year old son made another batch today. I posted it on facebook yesterday and 6 followers say they made it yesterday.

I fear that Rolos are going to become scarce.

MMM cute and tasty too. There are just not enough treats using pretzels, if you ask me. I was putting choc. covered pretzels in cookies! P.S. LollyChops sent me, and boy am I glad! OMT: I would love to have me a blendtec or anything else you are giving away!

My daughter Lucy, who doesn't like nuts or M&Ms, suggested putting another pretzel on top and making little sandwiches. We tried this and my kids love them!

I made these this weekend and they are super yummy! My 3 year old even helped by unwrapping the rolos and putting them on the pretzels.

Laura said...

You have seriously caused a Rolo shortage in Utah County! I live in Springville and the closest Costco that still has Rolos is Lehi. And my nearest Sam's club is out too!

Jen @ My Kitchen Addiction said...

Yum! These look amazing. I have made pretzels with a Hershey Kiss and M&M before, but this takes it to a whole new level. I will be making some of these this weekend!

thanks for this easy fun recipe. My 7 year old son helped me and he had a ton of fun. I used christmas M&m's and cashews witht he white choclate on top. Very cute, I know the people who are getting them in there cookie box will love them!

Amy said...

I just finished making these with my 3 and 5 year old daughters and they are great! They were super easy and very, very delicious. My husband is upset that I wasn't making these for us so I suppose I'll have to get a couple more bags of rolo's and make some more! :)

Heidi said...

I cannot believe I had never heard of these until this post! They are incredible. I made them tonight using holiday shaped mini pretzels and peanuts. Yum! One tip for the lazy, like me. Buy a big case of the rolo candy rolls at Sam's Club, then you don't have to unwrap a zillion individual rolos. I made three pans tonight and used about half of the box so it will be easy to use them all up with another night of making them.

I am convinced that the lowly pretzel is the world's best cookie in disguise. This is not the first pretzel treat recipe I've seen.

These are awesome!!!! I couldn't find Rolor so used Milky Ways.

OMG! I am in heaven because I got so fat from eating these and had a heart attack and died.

My daughter and I just got done making these with red & green M&Ms. She has nick-named them "Chocolate Volcanoes". I was going to give them to friends on Sunday...but I don't think they are going to last two whole days! SO yummy!

I just finished making these and they are yummy. Can't wait to bring them to work on Monday....hoping it stops snowing!
Happy Holidays and thanks for the great receipe!

I will definitely have to try this! What a great idea. Thank you so much for sharing this. I may have to add a touch of white chocolate to mine. I adore it paired with pretzels!

Thanks so much for this little recipe idea. While I was home for Christmas, we made these with my 2 1/2 year old niece and it worked out great. She loved helping lay out the pretzels, unwrapping the rolos, and laying those out too. But her favorite part was pressing the nuts and candy on top of the melted rolo when we pulled them from the oven. They are so easy that even a 2 year old can make them! I took some cute photos of her helping...great memories. :) Thanks!

I just made these today as a thank you gift. I now think I will be doing them for my wedding favors! They were so very easy that even the fiance could help without messing them up to badly :)
