Mango Pico de Gallo

One of my very favorite things about this time of the year (aside from the weather being absolutely amazing in Louisiana right now) is that produce is starting to get cheap. Gone are the days of rubbery, $7 watermelons and tiny, juiceless limes. Like those rock-hard, $2 each mangoes that stared at me all winter long, mocking me while I longed for this or this. But now. NOW. Those mangoes are luscious and juicy and 3 for $1. (Need help …

Fresh Herbs and the Garden

While cooking has always been a hobby I’ve loved, my actual education and work experience is in Horticulture.  For this reason every year around this time I get especially antsy to get planting a garden!   There is nothing I love more in the summer time than a big basket of fresh garden veggies and herbs cooked with little else and there’s something really fulfilling about growing things yourself.  I especially love it now that my boys are old enough …

Baked Fish Sticks with Tartar Sauce

One of my most favorite places on earth is a Seattle seafood institution: Ivar’s. If you’ve ever been to Seattle you’ve probably been to Ivar’s, and if you ever make it to Seattle in the future, make sure to put it on your list of places to go! You’ll sit by the waterfront and be surrounded by seagulls who act more like friendly trained golden retrievers. They’ll catch fries thrown in the air, or just eat them right out of …

Baked Chicken-Bacon Alfredo

Sara and I may or may not have shared the story about how this blog came to be, but if we have, it was a long time ago and I’m sure there are some of you who haven’t heard the story. My husband and I got married as broker-than-broke college students, so the summer after we got married, we went to Seattle, his hometown, so he could paint houses and we could save up some cash. The whole time we …

Our Best Bites Photography

Do you ever do special things on your birthday like kick your feet up, go on a laundry strike, and refuse to cook anything that day??  Well today is my birthday (the big #3-1 if you’re wondering) and because of that I’m taking a break from cooking (and let’s be honest, I always suck at the laundry so nothing new there) so we’re going to talk pictures!  We get a lot of emails asking questions about photography so I thought …

Cream Cheese and Jam Cookies

During Spring Break a few weeks ago (don’t ask me why preschoolers need Spring Break, but if it means I don’t have to shuttle my kid to school first thing in the morning, I’ll take it!), I was baking sugar cookies for my kids and I to decorate. I had also just finished a massive batch of strawberry freezer jam. I was also painting my toenails and drinking Diet Coke and playing around on Facebook and generally acting as though …

How To: Cook Bacon in the Oven

Who knew we’d live at a time where bacon was trendy?  Maybe you’re out of the loop and didn’t even know bacon is trendy.  Well my friends here’s some evidence.  Bacon is popping up all over the place.  Foodies are putting it on cupcakes, in cookies, on doughnuts and caramel.  You can buy bacon chips, bacon soap, and even bacon chapstick.  Yup, bacon chapstick.  You might remember when CafeMom did a feature on my kitchen I listed bacon as one of …

Coconut Banana Bread with Lime Glaze

We all know that when life gives you lemons you make lemonade, but what about when Costco gives you limes?  (You know, like after you give them your credit card…)  And what if the limes are the size of your fists?  I found myself in this predicament last week.  So I started off with  Chili-Lime Mango Chicken and Brazilian Lemonade. And of course I made a couple batches of my favorite Lime-Cilantro Dressing.  We drizzled that over big salads with …

Quick and Easy Mexican Dip

Sara and I have talked at length about how we wish our readers could see how ordinary our lives are. As you’ve probably guessed, we’re lovers of all food and we definitely don’t discriminate against food we don’t cook ourselves! Both of us have had experiences where people tell us they don’t want to cook food that we’ll be eating or they’re embarrassed about stuff they make. So we LOVE it when people are willing to share their culinary talents …
