Shrimp & Grits

I’ve lived in the South for 3 1/2 years now and have only eaten grits a handful of times. Granted, I’m not sure grits are as big in Louisiana as they are in the rest of the South, but still, you’d think I’d have eaten grits at least as many times as I’ve been served squirrel, right? I decided that needed to be remedied and if I was going to eat grits that I might as well go all out …

Chocolate-Frosted Peanut Butter Cookie Bars {Aka: School Lunch Peanut Butter Fingers}

You know, because we don’t have enough peanut butter on this site.  Or chocolate.  Or cookies.  I can almost guarantee once you make these for the first time you will become addicted and have to make them all the time.  Don’t say I didn’t warn you.  One of my favorite things about this recipe is that it makes a ton (they’re baked in a large sheet pan).  That can be both dangerous and helpful. Mostly helpful.  If I have to …

Tutorial: How Kate Scrambles Eggs

Hello, my name is Kate. Welcome to, like, the fifty-first Our Best Bites therapy session exploring why I hate eggs (and feel compelled to cook and blog about them). I don’t get it. There’s no rhyme or reason. Here are some more super uninteresting Kate/Egg Factoids: -When I was little (like little little), I used to make scrambled eggs every morning with my dad. -As a child, I liked pickled eggs (um, what. the. heck??) -I like breakfast burritos and …

Our Favorite Recipes!

When Sara and I celebrated our first blogiversary back in 2009, we did this fun little moment where we each shared a few of our favorite recipes from the other person. It totally felt like one of those tribute moments during the Oscars or something (I may have some delusions of grandeur here…) Anyway, since we’re on this whole “favorite things” kick this week, we figured we’d do it again! I’m sharing 6 of my favorite Sara recipes through the …

Weekend Update: Trip to the Farmer’s Market

I did a segment on our local news last weekend and my hubby came along to watch.  Since our kiddos were happily playing at Grandpa’s house, my hub and I decided to take advantage of the gorgeous weather afterwards and stroll around the close-by street market.  We’re helping spread the word about Frigidaire’s Kid’s Cooking Academy, and when you click here and pledge to “Eat Fresh” this summer, Frigidaire will donate $1 to the Save the Children Organization, which helps …

Peach Shakes {Definitely NOT a Harry Potter Post}

What? It’s July 15th? I think I heard rumors that there’s some kind of movie about a boy wizard or something. No, seriously, my Facebook and Google Reader feeds are full of evidence that the blogosphere is aflutter with Harry Potter recipes and party ideas. In case you haven’t guessed, Peach Shakes are not a Harry Potter recipe. I just can’t do it, you guys. If I do a Harry Potter party or even a recipe, then I have to …

Tutorial: How to Peel Peaches

I should really call this “Tutorial: How to Peel Peaches/Nectarines/Other Stone Fruits. Also, Tomatoes,” that just seemed like it wasn’t long enough, you know? So the Mighty Peach gets to be the mascot for this tutorial. You might be saying, “Hey, Kate, it’s called a paring knife and a tiny bit of elbow grease–do we really need a tutorial?” If I’m just going to peel one peach, I’ll do it with a little knife (and inevitably cut myself in the …

Mar-a-Lago Turkey Burgers

If you don’t know what Mar-a-Lago is, then you obviously don’t watch enough Celebrity Apprentice. (On a side note, are you noticing how many of our recipes here on Our Best Bites have references to television shows?  We’ve got the Tim Riggins Brownie, the Nestor Carbonel Mojito, the take-your-pick-of-16-hot-cabana-boys Mango Colada, and don’t forget the Biggest Loser Salad and the Teen Mom Peanut Butter Caramel Shortbread Bars.  No, we never watch tv.  In case you were wondering.)  Mar-a-Lago is a …

Orange Teriyaki Salmon

I’m a pretty organized person. People sometimes ask me if this blog thing takes over my life, and for the most part, my obsessive organizational skills keep that from happening. I plan way ahead of time, prepare my photos before my deadlines, check my calendar 50 times a day, etc. But then there are those rare occasions when life just takes over and my blog brain slips away for a little while (which is often a good thing!). Today was …

Mississippi Mud Brownies {a.k.a. The Tim Riggins Brownie}

My husband and I have been having a few of the same “discussions” our whole marriage: 1) the fact that he is seemingly incapable of throwing anything away. 2) the fact that I can’t ever remember where _________ is/are (insert your item of choice here–keys, pens, immunization cards, my purse, my cell phone, the house phone, my engagement ring…well, the engagement ring thing only happened once, but it was a tense couple of hours. Turns out I’d used it as …
