All About White Rice (Plus How to Cook it 3 Ways!)

I’ve had this post planned for almost a year now. When we first started the blog, I posted a super basic tutorial on how to cook white rice. Seriously…like the instructions on the rice bag (I promise, if we posted that same thing today, we’d get 50 mean emails about how our blog has gone downhill and we’re just skating by with stupid posts.) However, since we moved to Louisiana (also known as The Land Where No One Eats Potatoes, Just …

Pit Beef Sandwiches

You guys all know what starts this week, right?  No?  Then you must not be married to my husband, because I have been hearing a countdown to the start of college football season every day for several weeks now.  And while I won’t be the person spouting off stats and schedules, I do really love sports, and especially football season just because of everything that goes along with it.  Autumn is my favorite time of year, and when football season …

Green Beans with Balsamic Butter

One of the fundamental differences between Sara and me is that while she’s sadly lamenting her lack of a garden this summer, I’m just so super thankful I don’t have any plants in my garden to kill and then feel guilty about. I have the blackest of black thumbs. In fact, when I was a kid, I was genuinely worried that I wouldn’t be able to remember to feed and care for my future children because I was so very …

Roasted Pork Tenderloin with Plum Sauce

Once again I am starting a post by whining about how I have no food growing in my yard, but jumping for joy at the generosity of my friends and neighbors, who do.  Are you noticing the trend?  My sweet neighbor Kimber has a big ol’ plum tree in her front yard.  After eating half of the bowl she brought to the neighborhood BBQ last week, I started dreaming about plum recipes, so naturally I headed to her house in …

Overnight Apple-Cinnamon Oatmeal

You know what the easiest part of my day is? Mornings. Especially school mornings. Things always go super smooth because my kids always go to bed on time the night before and fall asleep promptly, not keeping each other up or coming out to ask for drinks and Band-Aids (for, you know, all those bedtime injuries) and bathroom trips. I have a dog that lets herself out of the house to take care of business and she definitely does not …

Eggs on Toast with Creamy Spinach Sauce

Kate and I get asked a lot about the kinds of go-to foods we have at home when we need quick and easy meals.  In my house we have plenty of frozen pizzas, burritos, and chicken nuggets in the freezer, but when I actually want a quick home-cooked meal, I have to say I probably grab eggs most often.  When I lived in Brazil, I got used to eating eggs in creative ways.  People often fried them up and served …

Triple Chip Blondies

So my son went back to school today. For all my talk about being ready for them to go back, I’ve gotta admit I’m sad (especially for my little monkey that starts kindergarten next week…I kind of blinked and she wasn’t a baby anymore.) Will. Not. Cry. (Already am.) So anyway, for whatever reason, it was really important to me that I pack him an extra-special lunch for his first day back at school. And that meant making one of …

Roasted Sweet Corn and Tomato Soup

Remember the time I didn’t plant a garden?  And then I got sad in August when everyone else seemed to have yummy produce coming out of their ears and I had to actually buy tomatoes at the grocery store?  Well lucky for me, I have super awesome friends and neighbors who have been sharing.  We spent this past weekend at our cabin in the mountains and as we were heading out the door to go there, a friend of mine …

Broccoli Salad

I’ve never really been a big fan of traditional broccoli salad. I have this weird thing where I don’t like cheddar cheese in pre-dressed salads, especially ones with mayonnaise-based dressings. I also am not super keen on the mayonnaise-and-sugar dressing; many recipes I’ve seen call for nearly equal parts mayo and sugar. And then I have this thing about raisins and how I feel like they never, ever belong with vegetables. Even ants on a log is a little …

Facebook Fan IPAD Giveaway!

It seems every blogger has their favorite platform to connect with their fans.  For some it’s twitter, for others it’s instagram, for us, it’s always been Facebook.  We love how many of you interact with us there, and use our page to ask questions, give us feedback, and humor our sometimes ridiculous status updates (remember the time I accidentally dumped chipotle chili powder in my oatmeal with blueberries??)  not to mention our many, many cell phone pictures from random aisles …
