Silly Cupcakes {For April Fools!}

My grand plans for cooking over the weekend (in general, and for today’s post) were thwarted by some vicious super-virus that has had me knocked flat on my back all weekend.  My husband was a trooper and has been nursing me back to health, while keeping the house clean, the kiddos out of my bed, and even cooking a fabulous Easter dinner for our company while I stayed quarantined.  I didn’t even realize the date until Kate mentioned April Fool’s, …

Buttermilk Orange Donut Muffins

I think sometimes when I’m hosting parties or major family events, people are often kind of surprised when I don’t make all of my most favorite, very best recipes. I usually pick one or two things that are really delicious and then go simple on everything else. This was not always the case. There was a time when I used to kill myself making food for parties and holidays and events. And then I realized that I kind of hated …

How To: Fold Bunny Napkins

I grew up in the Seattle area, and one of the things I loved most about it (besides the damp rain, beautiful coast line, gorgeous mountains, and never-ending greenery) was the expansive mix of cultures you find there.  The Asian influence is perhaps one of the strongest.  My dear first grade teacher, Mrs. Okita, first introduced me to things like China town, hom bows, chopsticks, and something that became one of my favorite hobbies: origami.  That’s right, little known fact …

Escape with Ghirardelli Intense Dark: Girl’s Night In & Giveaway

I think one of the hardest things for me to do is to remember to take time for myself. It’s really easy to say, “I’m busy and stressed and my 8-year-old and 5-year-old have homework and school projects on a level that I seriously don’t remember having until I was 13 and my husband is working 12 hours a day, 7 days a week and I haven’t slept more than 5 hours in a row in the last 8 1/2 …

{Cafe Rio Copycat} Mint Limeade

 So if you’re not familiar with Cafe Rio, it’s a fresh Mexican restaurant that began in Utah and has started to sprout up in other US locations. I first discovered it in college and it kind of changed how I viewed Mexican food (and food in general…hello, cilantro and Cilantro-Lime Vinaigrette and Creamy Lime-Cilantro dressing and freshly made flour tortillas). After my husband and I got married, it became our go-to place to eat on payday and when I go home, there are two …

Easter Roundup 2013

I have a confession. I thought this Sunday was Easter. And I didn’t get why Sara still had Easter recipes on the calendar next week, and I freaked out and paid extra for shipping on an Easter dress for my daughter to ensure its timely delivery and I told my husband who’s been working crazy hours that he would under no circumstances be at work on this Sunday. And then all the pieces started falling into place, like when Buddy …

Egg Carton Printable with Easy Easter Cupcakes!

Several years ago I had to transport some mini cupcakes and found they slid all over the cookie sheet I had set them on.  As I was grabbing something out of the fridge, I eyed a carton of eggs and it dawned on me that those little wells were probably the perfect size for my little mini cakes.  Sure enough; a perfect fit.  Every year since then I’ve thought about doing some sort of Easter printable with that theme and …

Candy Carrots & Carrot Patch Cupcakes

If you’re new around here, one thing you should know about Kate and me is that we don’t do very many fancy things, but we love to find un-fancy ways to make it look like we do fancy things.  Fake it till you make it?  Perhaps.  Take tiny molded edible objects, for example.  I am 98% certain you will never, ever find us making fondant and crafting tiny caricatures to adorn a cake people are going to tear apart.  But …

French Silk Pie

  Do you guys have those moments in your life that you always think back to when you’re referencing past events? Like…was that before or after my first child was born? Was that before or after we moved across the country? Or got married? Or started a new job or bought a house? Five years ago (and honestly, in so many ways, it feels like a lifetime ago), my husband and I had just moved to Louisiana. We had a …

Creamy Coconut-Lime Floats

Can someone please explain something to me?  What’s up with the mustache thing?  Kate and I have had many conversations with one another trying to figure out how on earth how mustaches (especially ones on sticks) became a “thing.”  Like, trendy enough that you find sweaters like the one below in the middle of Target.  And trendy enough that people are somehow convinced they need to jump on Pinterest crazes and make mustaches a part of important life events like …
