Black Bean and Mango Quesadillas

A few weeks ago some friends invited us over for dinner and they made these carnitas. I love sweet fruity stuff with Latin style pork so I brought some mango salsa to go with them.  We ate to our heart’s content and then afterwards we had a bonfire and came up with the most amazing s’mores concoctions you’ve ever (or never) imagined.  The crowning glory was the Berry-mallow-ella.  Giant hulled strawberries filled with nutella and then dunked in marshmallow fluff …

Retro Week Goody Bag Giveaway!

With the convenience of online shopping, I feel like there’s a fine art slipping through the cracks of society: the art of the care package.  When my Mom was in good health, she was the best package-sender.  She always had little knick-knacks and favorite things and when she found something she knew someone else would like, she slipped it into a box and sent it off in the mail.  When I was in college, and then living in Brazil for …

Creamy Chicken Noodle Casserole

We certainly couldn’t do a Retro-Week without a casserole, right??  You may have noticed we don’t have many casseroles on our site.  And we kind of pride ourselves on having only have one (yes, one!) recipe that calls for cream-of-anything soup (don’t mess with funeral potatoes.)  But there is something so nostalgically comforting about a nice warm casserole, and even more so if it involves a crunchy topping.  Like I’m sure many of you did, we ate a lot of …

Blueberry Boy Bait

I have kind of this weird obsession with the 1960s. In college (at least at my college), there were kids who wore cloaks and practiced swordplay on grassy areas and that wasn’t my thing. And there are people who have read Pride and Prejudice so many times they could legitimately pass for a Bennett sister, but, even as an English major, that was never really my time period, either. 1920s? Too flapper-y. 1930s? Too Depression-y. But the 1960s? I just find them …

Breakfast for Dinner

My go-to I-haven’t-planned-anything-for-dinner-but-need-something-quick meals involve breakfast food 98% of the time.  We eat some sort of breakfast-for-dinner meal at least once a week and it’s almost always my kids’ fave.  In fact, here are the remains of last night’s dinner.  Notice they didn’t even get full-size bowls and it’s not even pretend-to-be-healthy cereal.  It’s straight up Corn Pops.  That’s how we roll sometimes. If you want to get a little more sophisticated than that, and break away from the bacon …

Meyer Lemon Strawberry Shortcakes with Buttermilk Whipped Cream

When I was 5 or so, my dad took me to see some Strawberry Shortcake movie. About halfway through the movie, he told me we needed to get some popcorn. While we were in the lobby, he informed me that the movie was suddenly over and it was time to go home. I knew it wasn’t over. My father was a liar. I was kind of devastated. What kind of father, what kind of HUMAN pays good money to see …

Perfect Chocolate Brownies

Over the years we’ve gotten many requests for brownie recipes.  We have a few awesome ones on the site already, like my childhood favorite Chocolate-Mint Brownies, or the naughty-but-easy Ooey-Gooey Peanut Butter Chocolate Brownies, and even a marshmallow-studded, frosting-covered ode to Kate’s  under-aged man crush brownie.  But what about when you need just a regular, no frills brownie?  If a brownie is going to be just a brownie, then it has to be pretty spectacular to stand on its own.  …

Cajun-Style Hash Brown Skillet

  When my family went to New Orleans over this last Christmas vacation, we pretty much ate the whole time. Apparently that’s what Mormons do when they go to New Orleans with (or without) kids because drinking and naked people are both off the table (figuratively…I’m pretty sure there are plenty of both drinks and naked people on tables in New Orleans. This has taken a weird turn). Anyway, it was seriously the most delicious vacation I’ve ever taken. During …

Escape with Dark Chocolate: Printable Wrap!

I have lots of secret places in my house.  There’s a secret box in my closet where I hide little trinkets leftover from Christmas that I save to bribe my kids with later.  There’s a compartment in my freezer where the small ones have still not figured out I hide the good popsicles that I don’t share with them.  And then in my pantry there’s the fake-out secret candy box that I know my kids sneak into so I put …

Carnitas {Mexican Pulled Pork}

A few weeks ago, I posted a recipe where I mentioned carnitas and we got a bunch of requests for the recipe. And I totally get it because I’ve done a fair amount of hunting for the perfect carnitas recipes throughout the years. I’m not sure what’s so hard about getting a great recipe for carnitas, but everything I tried came out mushy or flavorless or one-note or too spicy or too fatty and I was frustrated. In a last-ditch attempt, …
