Coconut-Almond Breakfast Quinoa

Now that summer is here, one thing I’m really enjoying is not having my mornings so rushed.  No more racing to make school lunches, getting kids dressed, and hurrying to the bus stop.  While I still have lots to do every morning, I have a little more time for things like breakfast.  A couple of years ago, Kate and I went to the Thermador headquarters and there we spent a day with Chef Brad, the king of grains.  We had …

Hawaiian Style BBQ Ribs with Grilled Pineapple

We recently returned home from a fun family vacation in Hawaii.  We’ve taken our kids there a few times now, but we usually stay on Kauai where it’s a little off-the-beaten-path, and not at a big hotel or resort, which is how we like to roll.  This time, my husband had a business event at Aulani, which is a massive Disney resort on Oahu.  (As a side note: I’ve had lots of people ask me what I thought of Aulani- …

Hitting the Road with Kids: Travel Scavenger Hunt!

So remember last summer when I was, like 43 months pregnant in Louisiana in almost-July? Yeah, that was fun. My poor kids…aside from swimming lessons, I pretty much kept us locked inside the house with the shades down while I poked at the thermostat, wondering why 72 degrees felt like suffocation. So in an attempt to make this summer more fun than last summer, we have a lot of plans. We have places to go. We have people to see. …

Samoa Cream Pie

You know what one of the saddest times of the year is? When Girl Scout Cookies go away and you realize that you never got any. No Thin Mints. No Tagalongs. And…the saddest of all…no Samoas. The caramel. The chocolate. The toasted coconut. So I have kind of a funny story about how this recipe came to be. I was sadly standing in front of my pantry, realizing I’d missed Girl Scout season and not wanting to make dinner (which …

Mocktails & Munchies: How to Create a Stunningly Simple Patriotic Party Theme

You know all of those fancy, color-coordinated, beautifully table-scaped dessert displays you see on blogs and all over Pinterest?  The ones that make it obvious they had an entire team of people with a slew of professional equipment and (conveniently) an entire collection of coordinating themed dishes and table linens to pull it off?  The ones you confidently attempt to replicate and an hour before showtime find yourself hiding in a dark corner drowning your failure in a package of …

Herbed Garlic Butter with Feta and Lemon

Last month I showed you my backyard garden, or at least the beginnings of it.  We finished building the trellis in the middle, and had the iron fence and gate installed since then.  We still need to get our irrigation system finished up and finish the walking paths in between our planter boxes, but it’s coming together! Anyone who follows me on Instagram knows I’ve been kicking back for the past week in a tropical paradise. I’ll show you more …

Oven-Baked Parmesan Rosemary Fries

One of my favorite things about going to restaurants is finding inspiration to try new things in my own kitchen. Also: not having to do the dishes. So while I’ve been traveling, I’ve been trying to make a point of ordering things that would make me excited to get into the kitchen. One of my favorite side dishes is oven-baked fries like these ones and these ones–I feel like I’m getting a treat without completely busting the healthy eating …

How to: Create a Container Planting

When I was home from college one summer, working on my degree in Horticulture Science, I worked at a gorgeous Northwest garden center.  It was in a nice area of town and attracted many well-to-do customers who loved the look of lush extravagant landscapes,  but not so much getting their hands dirty.  (Yes, I realize I’m generalizing an incredibly broad spectrum of the general public, but you get the idea).   My most favorite job responsibility at the nursery was doing …

Grilled Chicken with Cucumber-Melon Salsa

You know those people who go on vacation and eat super healthy the whole time they’re gone, never going to any fun restaurants and carefully crafting healthy meals with the microwave, coffee maker, and the minibar fridge in their hotel room? Yeah, I don’t, either. The good news is that I (kind of shockingly) didn’t do a whole lot of damage in terms of the scale–I blame working out with Sara’s trainer, juggling an 11-month-old on the airplane(s), and my …

OBB Scrapbook: Kate’s Visit to Idaho!

Although most long-time readers of our blog know our story, we still get loads of people who assume we’re neighbors, or at the very least, live in the same town.  But the truth is, Kate and I live about 2000 miles away from one another.  I’m up in Boise, Idaho, and Kate is way down south in central Louisiana.  We’ve actually never lived in the same city (at least at the same time!)  When we have work events, like speaking …
